The College Continues to Grow and Better Serve its Members
The College’s Board of Governors (BOG) met in Chicago on September 12, 2015. The highlight of this meeting was the adoption of a budget which, in my opinion, for the first time in many years is solid and should return an operating surplus. There are many reasons for this operating surplus. First, the surplus is due to the structural changes the College has made to its finances during the last two years. These changes include controlling our expenses and funding the ACLM Foundation. Beginning this December, the Foundation will begin returning a portion of its investment earning to the College. The College’s financial strength is also due to the College’s development of a new stream of revenue in the form of providing other medical societies with CME accreditation services. Finally, the BOG voted a modest (10%) – more or less across the board – increase in annual dues. The BOG believed that such an increase was warranted because the College has gone almost a decade without raising its dues.
Other highlights of the BOG meeting include:
- Adoption of the Preliminary Program for the 2016 Annual Meeting. I encourage members of the College to plan to attend the 2016 ACLM Annual Meeting.
- Approval of Drs. Matt Okoye and Phil Shelton to be 2016 recipients of the Gold Medal Award.
In regards to Legal Medicine Perspectives (LMP), there is good news and bad news. The good news is that beginning with the current issue of LMP, members of the College will be able to earn up to 2 hours of AMA PRA Category I credit(s)™ for reading the LMP and taking a short test afterward. Details for this new membership benefit will be available in LMP and on our website. The bad news is that Dr. Gregory Cochran is stepping down as LMP’s Editor in Chief (EIC). When Gregg took the position a year and a half ago, he told me that he could only do it for a limited time as his academic work load was going to increase. That time has come. We will miss Gregg and thank him for his service. Anyone interested in serving as LMP’s next EIC should contact President-Elect Dr. Orr (email@example.com).
As always, Fellows and members should feel free to contact me (firstname.lastname@example.org or 913.526.5526) with their comments and feedback for the College.
