EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & OBJECTIVES

Educational Needs
Physicians, dentists, attorneys and educators who practice in the healthcare industry and its related fields recognize that the practice of medicine is complicated by abundant legislative requirements, administrative rules and regulations and Federal/State court decisions interpreting those laws. It is difficult to maintain a working knowledge of these developments. This meeting will provide details of new legislation, rules and court decisions, societal changes and shifts in the market place that will impact the practice of medicine. Key changes impacting the practice of medicine during the past one to two years include: the impact of technology including Electronic Medical Records (EMRs); accountable care organizations and their evolution; state imposed ethics requirements as part of the continuing education process; physicians seeking non-traditional employment; medical malpractice; the outsourcing of healthcare services; and social networking’s impact on the practice of medicine.

Objectives
The 54th Annual Conference of the American College of Legal Medicine will focus on a diverse range of current legal medicine topics. By the conclusion of this meeting, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe recent legislative and court opinions affecting medical and dental practice.
  2. Integrate medical and legal ethics into their daily practice.
  3. Identify techniques for overcoming personal impediments to a fulfilling professional practice.
  4. Explain medical malpractice risks, trial techniques and identify high-risk patient scenarios.
  5. Translate the impact of globalization on public health policy.
  6. Recognize the impact of social media and Telehealth on the practice of medicine and law.
  7. Integrate new regulatory changes into current practice.
  8. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of physician unions and opting out of Medicare.
  9. Explain the legal liabilities inherent in conducting peer review investigations.
  10. Explain the legislative history and case law of three areas critical to salaried physicians in order to join a professional union – their employee status, their supervisor status and their managerial status.
  11. Describe dental and legal issues involved in today’s health care.
  12. Explain the practice of legal medicine and healthcare initiatives on a global or international perspective.

ACCREDITATION INFORMATION

CME Accreditation Statement
The American College of Legal Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American College of Legal Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 22.25 AMA PRA Category I CreditsTM , which includes a maximum of 2.00 hours of Medical Ethics credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Conflict Resolution Statement
The American College of Legal Medicine has reviewed this activity’s speaker and planner disclosures and resolved all identified conflicts of interest, if applicable.

CLE Accreditation Statement
The American College of Legal Medicine designates this program for up to 22.25 hours of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit, which includes a maximum of 2.00 Legal Ethics credits. The precise amount of the CLE will vary by state.

CERP Statement
This continuing education activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the standards of the ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) through joint efforts between Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine and the American College of Legal Medicine for a maximum of 22.50 ADA CERP credits.

As this is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Dr. Cyril Wecht will provide unparalleled insight into the forensic pathologic evaluation of this case in which he was intimately involved. This will be an enjoyable and educational event for all.

American College of Legal Medicine has negotiated a discounted rate of $169.00 plus tax (currently 2% TPID fee and 13% occupancy tax) at the Westin Galleria Dallas. Additional charges for people over 17 years of age is $25.00 per person per night.
 
Hotel Deadline
The deadline to receive the ACLM group rate is Thursday, February 6, 2014. American College of Legal Medicine encourages you to make your reservation early, as the hotel and discount block may sellout before this date. After this date, reservations will be accepted based on availability and higher rates may apply.

Hotel Deposit and Cancellation Policy
A deposit equal to one night’s stay is required to hold a reservation. These deposits are fully refundable if the hotel is notified 24-hours prior to arrival and a cancellation number is obtained.

ACLM has started a green initiative, so we are cutting down on the use of paper and going electronic, which also cuts costs for the society as a whole. A link to the electronic version of the program book will be available on the website one week before the meeting. You will also be given a copy on CD.

Early Registration Deadline
Meeting registration forms must be received by the ACLM Executive Office by 1/31/14 to receive the discounted early registration rate. All forms received after this deadline will be assessed the regular registration fee.

Registration Cancellation and Refund Policy
Registration refund requests must be submitted in writing to the ACLM Executive Office no later than 1/27/14 . All refund requests will be subject to a $100 processing fee. No refunds will be made after 1/27/14.
